A set of three #1 bestselling mystery novels featuring private investigator, Jim Knighthorse, including

Dark Horse

When high school student Derrick Booker, the only black student at a posh Orange County high school, is accused of killing his white girlfriend, ex-college football hero and detective Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper into the murder. It doesn't take long for Knighthorse to realize that not all is as it seems at tranquil Huntington High, from a band director who preys on the innocent to a vice-principal with a secret agenda of her own. Not to mention someone's hired a professional killer to keep Knighthorse permanently off the case. As the investigation continues, Knighthorse's personal life is shattered by the discovery of new evidence relating to his mother's unsolved murder, a murder dating back twenty years. Reeling from the discovery, a determined Jim Knighthorse sets out to bring two killers to justice.

The Mummy Case

Private investigator Jim Knighthorse takes on a very, very cold case. When historian Willie Clarke dies of mysteriously of dehydration in the California deserts, ex-football hero Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper - and discovers a shocking connection to one of the West's oldest mysteries. Over a hundred years ago, an unnamed cowboy was murdered in the California desert and, due to freak weather conditions, would become mummified within twenty-four hours. Now known to the world as Sylvester the Mummy and displayed in a creepy curiosity shop, Sylvester and historian Willie Clarke will be forever linked in mystery. That is, unless private investigator Jim Knighthorse can survive long enough to untangle one of the West's greatest unsolved murders.

Hail Mary

In this third book of the series, Private investigator Jim Knighthorse finds himself on the trail of his mother's killer, a cold case spanning two decades. While on the hunt, he takes on a brutal case that takes him into shark-infested waters and deep into the heart of Mexico. All the while, Knighthorse comes closer and closer to finding his mother's killer... and there's going to be hell to pay.

I really enjoyed these books and cannot wait for more. Jim Knighthorse is fun to read and you can tell that Mr. Rain has alot of fun writing these. I've always enjoyed his sense of humor in all his books but he really shines with this series. Jim Knighthorse is a Private Investigator, a really big guy who used to play football for UCLA, he's arrogant, full of himself and is sexy and he knows it. Of course he's also a very damaged person with a very cold father (and I mean really cold - like potential serial killer cold lol). His mom was murdered violently when he was a boy and he found her body. I really like how human all of Rain's chracters are. They're good but flawed. Heroic yet troubled. Each book has it's own story that wraps up nicely while the series as a whole has an over-arc'ing storyline so there's no cliffhangers that force you to purchase more books. Just one good story after another. If you like Detective mysteries then you'll probably like these books. If you enjoy a bit of the supernatural then you'll definetly enjoy most of J.R. Rains books. I find his writing style very refreshing and professional. Honestly I've had more fun reading his books than anything else I have read in a long time. I'm hooked and now a lifelong fan. Great series. I'm just going to close with one word: Zumbooruk!

Jim Knighthorse Anthology Dark Horse The Mummy Case Hail Mary (Audible Audio Edition) JR Rain Jason Starr One Acre Audio Books Books Reviews

I liked the mysteries very much. The characters are well-drawn, the plots worked well, and the books are well-written. Rain felt he had to put God into all three stories in the form of an -ill-smelling homeless man, which gave him the occasion to tell us his theories about God, man, and life in general. None of this mattered much to the stories and i thought just took up space. This Jim--God--was not too obtrusive in the first book but became more so in the next two. The theology is amateurish and illogical, but I suggest you read the books anyway. They are very well done apart from that unnecessary intrusion.
The three books are very will written with interesting will developed characters. The story line are about Knighthorse's life and how it effects him. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys will written mysteries.
Enjoy reading
I became a JR Rain fan with the Samantha Moon novels. His characters are unique and quirky, each having their own distinct personalities. Those personalities leap off the page and make you instantly like the character. Jim Knighthorse is the quintessential man with a past that he hasn't quite escaped at the start of the stories. His football legacy was torn away and he has been forced to rebuild himself. I love the way the character is developed in these stories. He is definitely different from the run of the mill detectives and I cannot help but admire the relationships he has with the cast of characters in the stories. An fun, sometimes touching, sometimes overwhelming story that brings "real life" issues into stark relief against the one man army that is Jim Knighthorse. One note for the squeamish, there is one book in the trilogy that mentions a real world issue of cruelty against animals. The author does a wonderful job of expressing his outrage through the main character without overdoing the gore factor.
Also contains a sample of Moon Dance Vampire for Hire #1

1 - Dark Horse - Charles Brown asks Jim to help a young man from a
charge of murder that he did not commit. Who really did it and why
do they want the boy to hang for it? Also Jim talks to a man named
Jack who is God.

2 - The Mummy Case - Jim is hired by Jones T. Jones to check into the
murder of a historian that Jones hired to investigate the death of
Sylvester the Mummy, one of Huntington Beach's attractions. Who wanted
to kill the historian and who was Sylvester really? Jim also is
investigating his mom's twenty year old murder

3 - Hail Mary - Heidi Mann asks Jim to check out what happened to her
missing boyfriend. Also Jim fears confronting his mother's killer.

Great mysteries. . .I loved Jim Knighthorse. Must read.
I really enjoyed the 3 books in this series and fell a little bit in love with the main character, Jim Knighthorse!
The dialog is witty and at times laughable; good character development. The 3 stories are well paced, well constructed, and not too gory or too overly sexualized.
Only 2 criticisms overuse of the "F" word in the dialog (words like "screw" or just "damn" could be substituted) and the unbelievable amount of time Knighthorse's police friends spend with him to assist and solve cases. Minor points; still highly recommend these 3 books (4th book, "Clean Slate", is a disappointment).
Enjoyable
Violence. No drag-you-down drama.
This bundle has a great ending with Jim and his mother's spirit.

Intriguing storylines, believable characters with distinct personalities, thought-provoking and snarky dialogue create an entertaining collection from J. R. Rains.

I will re-read these stories and always look forward to works by this author.
Knighthorse is an enjoyable central character. He has flaws (alcoholism), a grandiose self-image (in tune with his size and football accomplishments), and an interesting sense of humor.

The books were well-written, though I didn't appreciate the descent into baser language--it makes it difficult to recommend it to my friends. His discussions with God do let us see some depth and openness in Jim while he is trying to workout just who God is and what he should be doing about it. His conclusions may not be your conclusions.

I like his relationship with his girlfriend. His self-confidence (in forcing her to make the final decision about being together without wheedling on his part) is something we should all have.

Except for the language issues, I would recommend this series (but if you are disturbed by graphic descriptions of animal cruelty or cold-hearted murderers, you might want to avoid the third one).
